Introducing the ROKR!

August 6, 2008

Motorola is at it again, this time debuting the latest in what is becoming a long line of FM-enabled cell phones for the listener on the go. The ROKR EM25 is a lovely little device that brings together the best of our rapidly expanding menu of audio choices. It was announced on August 5 and is shipping globally later this quarter.

The ROKR EM25 has a built-in MP3 player and FM radio. A dedicated music key and music controls play, pause, forward and rewind songs. An integrated RDS radio displays available FM station information like song, artist and genre. Users can use FMShare to share stations with friends by sending it in a text message and SONGID technology identifies unknown songs.

FMShare? Now that is a brilliant harnessing of the social media and text messaging mindset to traditional broadcast to the betterment of both. With capacity for up to 2 GB of storage (microSD memory card) this makes for an entertainment/communications option for those of us who choose not to go the iPhone route.

I rather like the fact that in addition to snazzier contemporary listening options like Blue Tooth, the manufacturers had the common sense to add a standard universal 3.5mm jack for headphones. Nicely done!
